Alpha Phi Foundation
Alpha Phi Foundation
The Alpha Phi Foundation is committed to empowering women through our commitment to women’s heart health, and supporting our members on their academic and life journeys.
In order for women to survive, thrive, and accomplish their goals, health is foundational. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, and affects women at a disproportional rate compared to men. For centuries women’s health and medicine have been under-researched and underfunded, but as time goes on there is a clear deficit in heart research specifically. Women are put at a greater risk due to smaller arteries, and pregnancies put increased stress on the heart and blood vessels. Heart and vessel issues are a leading cause of complications during pregnancies, but are preventable with proper caution and monitoring. Women’s symptoms are less obvious, and may not include the typical chest pain associated with heart conditions. Some women, although experiencing symptoms, may ignore them due to societal narratives that invalidate their pain and paint them as overdramatic. The fight for women’s heart health awareness, care, and advancement is one that the women of Alpha Phi are incredibly passionate about, and we will continue to bring women together to raise money for the cause. “The annual Heart to Heart Grant awards $100,000 to medical professionals to better understand heart disease in women—specifically its symptoms, treatment, and prevention” (Alpha Phi Foundation). The most recent recipient was the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
The money raised by Alpha Phi chapters and generous donors also goes towards…
Leadership:
Through a series of leadership funds including the Susan Brink Fund, and the Susan Weiskittle Endowment, training programs, opportunities, and support for exceptional leadership skills are offered to our members. The Alpha Phi Foundation helps to empower women in leadership positions in chapters across America. Leadership training is integral in sending our members into the workforce with the skills, confidence, and eagerness to be influential members wherever they chose to continue their journey.
Scholarships:
In order to aid the members of Alpha Phi in pursuing their academic aspirations, the Alpha Phi Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding Alpha Phis in order to pay for tuition and course-related fees in either undergraduate or graduate education.
Assistance Grants:
The Alpha Phi Foundation reminds us that membership in this fraternity is for life, and no member should ever face life’s many challenges alone. In the spirit of this sisterhood, the Alpha Phi Forget Me Not Fund aids members and their families during times of need and unfortunate circumstances. This financial assistance is a gift and reminder of the care and compassion that we strive to build amongst members and share with our community.
Heritage:
The women that started and have pioneered the Alpha Phi to become the community it is today have our overwhelming thanks. In order to remember their accomplishments, and track Alpha Phi’s endeavors over time, we continue to fund documentation of history through books, videos, and preservation of our rituals.
WHY WE CARE
Approximately 1 in 16 women ages 20 or older have coronary heart disease.
In 2020 alone, 314,186 women died of heart disease.
Only about 30% of heart disease studies participants are women.
Less than 50% of women entering pregnancy in the US have good heart health.
10-20% of women will have a heart related complication during pregnancy.
WE MAKE PHILANTHROPY FUN!
Red Dress Ball
The annual red dress ball has family and friends come together to raise money for women’s heart health, on the night of bidding and bonding. By bringing together our Alpha Phi family, enjoying a meal, and auctioning off generous donations, we are able to make a huge impact on the Alpha Phi Foundation. Activities include a silent auction of baskets made by our members, a live auction of high-ticket items, photo booths, entertainment, and speeches.
Phi Week
During the spring quarter, the annual Phi Week is a week-long fundraiser for our foundation through a variety of activities. During the week food fundraisers are open to everyone at some of our favorite local Isla Vista establishments, who donate a portion of their profits to our cause. Mid-week we have the King of Hearts male beauty pageant, where a member of each fraternity is invited to show off their talents, dancing skills, and fashionable style during a variety production at IV Theatre. All sorority presidents are invited to vote for who will be the King of Hearts. The week ends with Phi Ball, a volleyball tournament that promises fierce competition, fabulous prizes, and of course, fun!
